Your newly purchased chopping board is made of natural materials and will therefore need a little tender love and care to maintain it in as good a condition as possible.
Before you purchased your board, It has already been treated with mineral oil and a mineral oil and bees wax paste/conditioner. To keep it in as good as condition as possible there are a few Do’s and Don’ts.
firstly remove any loose crumbs or bits of food. Secondly wipe down with a moist warm slightly soapy sponge/scouring pad. Thirdly remove any excess water or soap with a kitchen towel and leave to dry naturally standing on its edge.
At times you may need to clean your board a little more thoroughly. To do this moisten the board with warm soapy water (not too much) sprinkle coarse salt over it, rub a half cut lemon over the board while slightly squeezing it, then wipe off with a moist cloth/kitchen towel and allow to dry as above.
It is recommended that you treat your chopping board with either mineral oil or a combination of mineral oil & bees wax on a regular basis. Preferably little and often. These oils and pastes only need to be lightly applied, left for a few hours or overnight then buffed the following day.
It may sound obvious but when using your board try to use sharp knives/cutting implements using light pressure avoiding cutting deep grooves and gashes into your new board. Sharp knives are safer to use and give a better result with your food preparation.
When using any chopping/cutting board inevitably you will get knife makes on it over a period, regardless of how careful you are. The good thing about your new chopping board is that this can be easily treated. All you need is sandpaper (various grades dependant on how marked your board is), mineral oil and or chopping board paste.
Firstly sand the board to remove the grooves with a coarse sandpaper, then snad with a finer paper and final one more sand with a very fine sand paper no more than 240 or 320 grit is required.
Secondly treat the sanded surfaces with your choice of finish (mineral oil, chopping board paste/conditioner or both). Repeat stage two at least twice, leave for 24 hours buff up and start to use again.
If you are unsure on how to do this I will be more than happy to either advise you or even carry this out for you. You can always give me a call or drop me an email for any advice.
1. Never submerge your board fully in water of any temperature or leave to soak to remove stains.
